What are skin allergies?
What are skin allergies?
Allergies occur when the body's immune system reacts abnormally to substances that are not harmful. In general, the body's immune system protects us from harmful diseases, but those with skin allergies have an over-sensitive immune system. Eczema, hives, contact dermatitis and angioedema are all common allergic skin reactions.
What are the main signs and symptoms?
The following is a list of common signs and symptoms:
- Redness.
- Itching.
- Swelling.
- The rash.
- Rise like a boil.
- Scaly skin.
- Cracked skin.
Eczema and hives are common skin allergies and the symptoms can be distinguished between the two. Eczema usually occurs on the skin of the face as itching, redness or dryness, it may be fluid and may come out when scratched. Hives or hives can become itchy, reddish and white in any part of the body, like boils and disappear in a few minutes or weeks. Angioedema (swelling due to accumulation of fluid) occurs around the face, around the eyes, cheeks or lips. In addition, contact dermatitis is caused by itching and redness of the skin in response to direct contact with the allergen.
What is the main reason?
Allergies are usually caused by contact with one of the following allergens:
- Latex.
- Nettle creeper.
- Cold and hot temperatures.
- Pollen.
- Nuts, food items like open aquatic animals.
- Water.
- Insects.
- Medicine.
- The sun.
How is it diagnosed and treated?
The doctor may ask about your medical and family history and perform a physical examination. Physicians may also suggest skin tests, patch tests, or blood tests to determine the cause of the allergy. Skin prick tests or intradermal tests may be done to confirm the diagnosis. Another diagnostic test is the Physician-Supervised Challenge Test, in which case you will receive a small amount of allergen by inhalation or by mouth.
The prognosis for the treatment of allergies depends on the medical history, the results of allergen tests, and the severity of the symptoms. The nasal saline rinse process helps reduce the symptoms of airborne allergens. Depending on the allergic reaction, the doctor may also recommend medication such as nasal corticosteroids, mast cell inhibitors, decongestants, and epinephrine. Tropical creams containing steroids, oral antihistamines and antibiotics may be used to relieve symptoms.
However, itchy skin rashes should be avoided, as it can worsen the condition. Instead, lightly rub the blister with a soft cotton cloth to relieve discomfort. Bathing in warm water, moisturizing the affected area of the skin, avoiding contact with bleach, harsh detergents or soaps help reduce the symptoms of skin allergies.
